ACT 1B Bodyguard

CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protection Operations

Designed for individuals seeking a career in executive protection or security operations, this training provides the foundational skills and practical knowledge required to operate as a professional bodyguard in Australia and beyond.

Throughout the course, you will develop critical competencies in threat assessment, client safety, tactical awareness, and operational planning. Delivered by experienced instructors with real-world industry backgrounds, the ACT 1B Bodyguard Course combines classroom learning with hands-on scenarios to prepare you for the challenges of protective services work.

Whether you’re transitioning from military or law enforcement, already working in security, or starting a new career path, this course equips you with the confidence and capability to protect high-profile clients and navigate dynamic security environments.

Upon successful completion of the ACT 1B Bodyguard training, you will be awarded a CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protection Operations.

This qualification will allow you to apply to Access Canberra for a 1B licence class.

With this licence you could carry out roles such as:

  • Close Personal Protection Officer (CPPO)
  • Executive Protection Officer
  • Celebrity or Media Protection Agent
  • High-Risk Security Escort
  • Private Security Consultant
  • Security Detail Team Member
  • Protective Driver / Security Chauffeur
  • High-Value Asset Escort

For entry to this course you must:

  • Be eligible to apply for a Security Providers Licence in the ACT:
    • Be 18 years or older (You can enrol and complete your training at the age of 17 and 9 months but cannot apply for your licence until you are 18).
    • Have not been convicted of a disqualifying offence in the past 10 years
    • Be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold an appropriate Visa to work in Australia

You will need access to a computer with an internet connection to complete the online component of this course.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) requirements for Security Training

IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ

Working in the Security Industry requires a high level of English Language and Literacy skills. The course requires all students to be able to read, write and speak clearly in English.

During the course, students will be required to complete closed-book exams and other assessments where the trainer cannot help. If you cannot read, write, and speak English well then you will NOT pass the course.

If you are not confident with reading, writing, and speaking English then you should not enrol into this course. Asset College will conduct LLN testing at the start of the course and will not allow students to continue if they do not meet the minimum requirements.

Security Officers also require basic digital literacy (computer skills) to perform their role. This could include writing incident reports, responding to emails, using online rostering apps or other online tasks.

During the course, students will be required to complete some activities using computers, laptops, or other devices. While the trainer can provide some assistance, it is expected that students have some basic computer skills before commencing the course.

You must be physically capable of responding to first aid emergency scenarios, including providing CPR to a manikin on the floor. Anyone in a wheelchair or with other disabilities that may impact their participation in these activities should contact us to discuss their individual circumstances before enrolling.

To be able to apply for the ACT 1B Bodyguard licence, you will need to complete the following units to achieve the CPP31418 Certificate III in Close Protection Operations.

Extension Request Fees

Should you require an extension on your study, the following applies:

Assessment Re-Submission Fees

Should you be deemed not competent after 2 attempts at a unit of competency, an assessment re-submission fee of $50 will apply per assessment.

Re-Enrolment

Should you wish to cancel your course or your enrolment is cancelled by us due to no progress and you then wish to re-enrol, a re-enrolment fee of 25% of the standard course fee will apply if requested within 3 months of initial cancellation. If re-enrolment is requested within 4 – 12 months of initial cancellation, 50% of the standard course fee will apply.

To get a security licence you need to have both qualifications and meet general suitability criteria.

Disqualifying offences

You can’t get a security licence if you’ve been convicted in the last 10 years or found guilty in the last 5 years, and received a penalty of $500.00 or more, a sentence of imprisonment, or both, in relation to of an offence involving:

  • violence, dishonesty or theft
  • firearms or other weapons
  • other than for possession, a controlled drug, controlled plant or controlled precursor within the meaning of the Criminal Code 2002
  • robbery
  • terrorism.

General suitability is determined under Division 3.5 of the Security Industry Act 2003.

Workplace rights and responsibilities training

If you’re applying for subclass 1B  you need to complete Workplace rights and responsibilities training.

The United Workers Union provides the training. To register email your name, phone number and email address to act@unitedworkers.org.au.

Once you’ve successfully completed the course, United Workers Union will issue you a certificate. You’ll need this for your security licence application.
