The Certificate IV in Firearms – Range Officer Stream is a nationally recognised qualification designed for individuals seeking to manage and supervise live-fire activities at shooting ranges, training facilities, and firearms clubs. This specialised stream prepares you to take on critical responsibilities as a range officer, ensuring the safety, compliance, and smooth operation of firearm training and recreational shooting environments.

As a qualified range officer, you’ll develop expertise in risk management, range control procedures, emergency response, and legal compliance. You’ll also learn how to supervise participants, enforce safety protocols, and maintain accurate records in line with state and federal firearms legislation.

Ideal for those working in sporting clubs, commercial ranges, training organisations, or law enforcement support roles, this course provides the operational knowledge and leadership skills required to run safe and compliant firearms activities.

Essential entry requirements

Entrants to the Certificate IV in Firearms must:

  • Be over 18 years of age
  • Meet the fit and proper person legislative requirements for possession and use of firearms in the relevant Australian State/Territory
  • Be able to demonstrate safe handling experience with firearms, evidenced by completing a firearm safety course (approved for firearm licensing in Australia) issued within the previous 12 months, holding a current Australian firearms licence or current employment in a role where firearms are used.

Recommended entry requirements

It is recommended that entrants:

  • Have a minimum of 3 years experience in the safe handling and use of a variety of different firearms in a sporting, recreational or occupational environment
  • Hold HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (or its successor) attained within the last three years
  • Meet the requirements for working with children in the relevant Australian State/Territory
  • Hold TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or its successor) or another relevant training and assessment qualification described in the Standards for RTO’s if undertaking the Firearms Instructor specialisation.

This course is not open to international students (student visa 500).

The Certificate IV in Firearms (Range Officer) requires a total of 12 units, including 7 core units and 5 electives. This particular stream includes units for range officer. Additional units may be completed and issued on a Statement of Attainment.

  • NAT11141002 Identify, assess and control risk when working with firearms
  • NAT11141003 Promote legal and ethical behaviour with firearms
  • NAT11141004 Identify and comply with firearms legislation, regulation and policy
  • NAT11141005 Handle, use and maintain firearms
  • NAT11141006 Perform firearms emergency and incident response procedures
  • NAT11141007 Apply first aid treatment of a gunshot wound

Group A (Range Officer)

  • NAT11141008 Supervise the safe operation of firearms by individuals and groups
  • NAT11141009 Provide marksmanship coaching
  • NAT11141010 Conduct live fire range practices
  • NAT11141013 Deliver introductory firearm safety training programs
  • NAT11141012 Instruct use of firearms for security operations
