Corrections Officer Firearms Course

This course is specifically designed for correctional officers who are required to possess and use firearms as part of their official duties in state or privately operated correctional facilities. Asset College offers two distinct delivery options:

  • Initial Firearms Course (5 days plus online learning)
Covers CSCSAS030 – Monitor control centre operations and CSCSAS035 – Operate and maintain a firearm.
  • Annual Firearms Refresher Course (1 day)
Covers CSCSAS035 – Operate and maintain a firearm to ensure continued competency and compliance.

Both programs can be contextualised to align with the specific firearm types used in the officer’s workplace, including rifles, shotguns, and handguns.

Please note: This training is not available for public enrolment. It is delivered exclusively by arrangement with correctional service providers.

Upon successful completion, participants will:

  • Develop skills in the safe operation, maintenance, and handling of firearms in correctional environments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of use-of-force principles relevant to firearm use in custodial settings.
  • Meet the training and regulatory requirements for firearms use by correctional officers in the applicable state or territory.
  • Receive a Statement of Attainment listing the completed unit(s) from the CSC40122 Certificate IV in Correctional Practice.

This training is restricted to current employees of government or private correctional facilities. Participants must:

  • Be currently employed as a correctional officer.
  • Be formally nominated or approved by their employer or department representative.
  • Meet state/territory legislative and probity requirements for firearm possession and use. This may exclude individuals with:
    • Certain criminal convictions
    • History of domestic or other violence
    • Drug-related offences
  • In some jurisdictions, pass a psychological or medical assessment.

Asset College works closely with employers to ensure screening processes meet all legal and organisational requirements.

This training does not lead to a civilian firearms licence. However, it is designed to satisfy the regulatory training requirements for correctional officers to be authorised to possess and use firearms during the course of their duties, under the relevant jurisdiction’s legislation.

Asset College will ensure alignment with each state or territory’s training and operational requirements as part of the custom delivery process.

I very much enjoyed my training. We had some fun as we learned and it is always great to have the trainer relate the material to real-life issues and events.

I’ve been a trainer myself for years and often find the training I attend to be a bit dry and lifeless.  The trainer kept us awake and entertained and made sure we knew what we were doing.  It was fun and refreshing.
