What Are “Digital Skills”?
Digital skills refer to your ability to use:
- Devices (computers, tablets, smartphones)
- Basic software (email, internet browsers, word processors)
- Online platforms (learning management systems, assessment portals)
- Workplace tools (digital forms, incident reporting apps, radios with digital features)
You don’t need to be a tech expert – but you do need to feel comfortable using everyday tools and systems that are common in training and security work.
Digital Tools Used in Security Training
At Asset College, many students complete training using a mix of in-class and online systems. You may be expected to:
- Log in to a learning management system (LMS)
- Submit assessments or complete eLearning modules online
- Download and read PDFs or training materials
- Join a virtual meeting or video session
- Type reports or written tasks
- Use email and upload documents as part of enrolment or assessment
If you haven’t used computers in a while, this can feel overwhelming – but with preparation, many students build their skills quickly.
Digital Skills in the Workplace
In the security industry, officers often use technology to:
- Complete digital patrol logs or incident reports
- Operate CCTV or alarm systems
- Communicate via radios or mobile apps
- Access rosters, site instructions, or emergency plans on a device
- Use online portals to manage licences, job records, or compliance documents

Digital Skills Assessment at Enrolment
All prospective students complete a Digital Skills Assessment during the enrolment process. This helps us understand your ability to:
- Navigate an online platform
- Use a computer or tablet for basic tasks
- Type short answers and upload documents
- Access and interact with digital training materials
Like the LLN assessment, this isn’t a test to “pass” – it’s a tool to identify if you’re ready to begin training, or may benefit from further preparation.
What If I’m Not Confident With Technology?
If your digital skills are limited, we’ll support you by exploring:
- Referral to external program, such as:
- Foundation digital literacy courses
- Community centres or libraries offering tech help for adults

- Delaying enrolment to focus on building your skills
- Alternative training pathways (if available) with different delivery modes
Starting a course without digital confidence can lead to frustration and disengagement. Taking time to prepare can make all the difference.
Reasonable Adjustments and Our Approach
We consider reasonable adjustments to support students who are still developing digital skills. However, we will not make adjustments that:
- Remove digital tasks that are essential to the course
- Undermine the integrity of assessments or learning outcomes
- Disrupt the experience of other students or rely on extensive one-on-one support
- Compromise safety when technology is part of workplace readiness
We will support you within the boundaries of what is safe, fair, and realistic for success in both training and employment.
Decision-Making Checklist: Am I Digitally Ready?
Ask yourself:
- Can I use a computer, tablet, or smartphone to open documents and access the internet?
- Can I type short responses and fill in online forms?
- Can I use email to receive and send messages or documents?
- Can I log into and navigate an online learning system?
- Do I know how to watch videos, download files, or submit work digitally?
- Have I had help or training in using digital tools for learning or work?
